Warning: Cyclone 'Portugal' expected to hit Brazil coast with heavy rain

Cyclone 'Portugal' is on course to hit the southern coast of Brazil with heavy rain and strong winds.

The storm is expected to make landfall in Santa Catarina state on Monday, bringing with it potential for flooding and landslides.

The Brazilian Meteorological Institute (INMET) has issued a warning for the states of Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and ParanĆ”, urging residents to take precautions.

INMET meteorologist Marcelo Schneider said the storm is expected to bring "heavy rainfall, strong winds and high waves."

The storm is currently located about 1,000 kilometers off the coast of southern Brazil and is moving west-southwest at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.

INMET has warned that the storm could cause flooding and landslides in coastal areas, and has urged residents to stay away from beaches and rivers.

The storm is expected to weaken as it moves inland, but INMET has warned that it could still cause significant damage.

Here are some tips to stay safe during a cyclone:

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.
  • If you must go outside, wear a raincoat and boots.
  • Do not drive through flooded areas.
  • Be aware of the risk of landslides.
  • If you see a downed power line, stay away from it and call the authorities.
