Melbourne superboot Nick McLarty has won the starting punters job at Ohio State University after sending a football out of a stadium in the preseason.
The former Scotch College student sent a punt 90 yards out of the stadium during a preseason scrimmage, which has since gone viral on social media.
McLarty, who is in his first year at Ohio State, is now expected to start for the Buckeyes in their season opener against Notre Dame on September 3.
McLarty's Punt a Sign of Things to Come
McLarty's punt was not only impressive, but it also serves as a warning to opposing teams. The Buckeyes have a long history of producing great punters, and McLarty looks like he is the next in line.
McLarty's punting average in high school was 45.6 yards per punt, and he also had a long punt of 70 yards. He is also a talented athlete, having played Australian rules football at a high level.
With McLarty's talent and experience, the Buckeyes are expected to have one of the best punting units in the country in 2023.
McLarty's Journey to Ohio State
McLarty's journey to Ohio State began in Melbourne, Australia. He played Australian rules football for the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup, and he was also a member of the Australian under-18 team.
In 2021, McLarty decided to pursue a punting career in the United States. He attended Prokick Australia, a punting academy in Melbourne, and he quickly became one of the top punting prospects in the country.
McLarty was offered a scholarship to Ohio State in 2022, and he enrolled in January of 2023. He is now expected to start for the Buckeyes in their season opener against Notre Dame on September 3.
